Fun Musical Events at YSS!
Biannual Piano Recitals
Since June 2008, our piano recitals have taken place twice each year: the Holiday Season Recital in December and the Year-End Recital in June at a venue in midtown or my students’ homes. Every semester, students are given a few projects: classical pieces and jazz or pop compositions. At the recital, they will demonstrate what they have accomplished that semester by performing those pieces in front of their families, friends, and peers in a safe and friendly environment.
It has been particularly FUN for students to experience the nerve-wracking yet rewarding atmosphere of a recital. They look forward to them and almost always start thinking about their next projects as soon as they finish their recital performances. Not only students, but also parents, grandparents, and friends look forward to our bi-annual recitals. They have become such tradition in the YSS community that some of the extended families of our students fly in from overseas to attend, and the graduates of YSS are always eager to join as performers.
The Piano Teachers Congress of New York
The Piano Teachers Congress of New York was established in 1926 to promote interest in music in the home and community. Their mission is to provide musical opportunities not only for students likely to pursue piano as a career but also for those whose ultimate goal in the piano study is to “experience the joy of music-making.”
Since YSS is a member of PTCNY, our students can participate in a variety of recitals and master classes hosted by the PTC, such as 20/21 Century Music Festival, Piano Plus!, Honors Program, Piano Salon, and Spring/Fall Incentive Programs. These opportunities include a recital exclusively for the piano ensemble (four hands duet, concertos, etc.) or for the contemporary piano repertoire, a recital only for adult piano students (18 years or older), and workshops for developing young artists. There is also an amazing opportunity for those who take piano lessons seriously--a possible chance to perform at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall!!

Recitals for Gifted/Talented Students
One of the ways to motivate our students to practice is to encourage them to perform live as often as they can. In spring, we host a recital at Steinway Hall for advanced piano students, who are getting ready to compete or perform at a big concert venue. There is another recital for those who seek for more performance opportunities, hosted by The Piano School of NYC at the hottest music venue, Jazz at Lincoln Center!
